Love is fear

Perfect love, it is said, drives out fear. I seem to be experienced with the opposite effect; the closer I seem to get to Divine love the more terrified I become. When I feel pursued I feel embarrassed or violated and certainly distrustful of the pursuer. As it is often put by self-deprecating cynics: I don't wish to be a part of any club that'll have me. Grace looks past such self-doubt and contempt and slobbers wet kisses anyway, but that affection and acceptance doesn't always make it past my skepticism. Make me pay instead. Nothing this good can be trusted. Occasionally grace gets through and leaves us wondering why we brought a sword to bed for all those years. But then God, in all his invisibleness, takes a vacation and we're back to swashbuckling with the hound of hell. Perfect love is just theory to us humans, and according to some philosophy anything that exists in theory is not worth the intellectual effort. So why does God promise us a perfect love? Is God an idealist? What silly questions. No matter, we'd love your input on these half-notions as we pen lyrics and prayers for Urban Hymnal #2 (sometime in March).

Hey, I'm writing a chapter for a church planting book, Faith vs. Fear. I'm finding that maybe a more proper understanding of it is Fear vs. fear. Is faith really faith if there is not fear factor? I would love to see some quote worthy lyrics that I might use for the chapter. my email is adam@citylifeonline.net.

Good topics... you say that "perfect love is just theory to us humans," and I think I enjoy some umbrage with that statement. I don't think we nearly achieve the consistency God does, but you have to say you've experienced moments with other humas where they've loved you with that heart melting (sword-stashing) Goodness. I think we get glimpses in each other. We certainly can't sustain that, and maybe the consistency is what makes it perfect?, but the moments are there for us in our human relationships. We don't have fear in the moment we are loved by someone with the grace of God. Soon after we may dirty the pants with fear of what it means that someone loves us like that. Can't wait to digest the lyrics...
Peace,
~Patrick

I like your honesty here. I'm only beginning to trust--staggering toward that love.
