The longest night of the year
Our theme for this first Urban Hymnal service is "The longest night of the year," a concept found in the Celtic tradition (you may know the Over the Rhine album of similar name). We liked the sound of it as it spoke towards some of the ache and darkness of waiting. Of course, those in the Southern Hemisphere will be observing Advent on the shortest night of the year--I wonder how this affects the mood of Advent as the sun shines its brightest and ice tea is the drink de jour.
And I've posted an instrumental piece on the Urban Hymnal website that we may be performing. It is the same piece I performed at the Mars Hill Grad School Fall retreat for those of you who were in attendance. Word has it that KSER will be spinning "Sophia" this Friday evening.

Hi Zadok,
My name's Tim. I'm helping out, at least in spirit, with Urban Hymnal at St. Mark's--I made the connection via Karen Ward, and am a parishioner at the Cathedral.
I spent two years in New Zealand, and advent as the shortest night of the year is a beautiful thing, actually. They're still drinking their tea hot (the kiwi doesn't fall far from the English tree), but it's Christmas on the beach and celebration in the sun. Always seemed more appropriate than the cold, the snow and the dark. They should've put Good Friday on the third weekend of December up here...
Zadok, I just want you to know I'm jacked about this gathering. This feels beautiful. -Tucker
Tim,
great to meet you, and to have you helping out--even in spirit. we occasionally have to pinch ourselves when we realize that your church has given us such creative freedom on a FRI night. I hope the evening is a time of beauty and awe among other things. we're just about done with the music and have only the visual art to gather up.
Zadok
Tucker,
good to hear from you as always. yes yes, we too are quite excited to finally have this little project come together.
